Hitman who targeted Scottish Conservative leader in acid attack to be released from prison

A hitman who targeted the Scottish Conservative leader, Russell Findlay, in an acid attack is due to be released from prison.

In December 2015, the MSP, who was investigations editor of the Scottish Sun at the time, had sulphuric acid thrown in his face after answering the door to a man disguised as a postman.

Findlay overpowered William Burns with the help of his neighbours, and he was arrested at the scene.

Following a trial, the assailant was found guilty of assault to severe injury and danger of life. Burns was jailed for 10 years before spending five years under supervision after his release.

Last October, Burns was refused parole with the Scottish Tory leader being informed of the decision over email.

Findlay has now confirmed that the hitman is due to be released on Wednesday.

He added: “I take my personal safety seriously, but will not be intimidated by cowardly gangland cretins.”
