Hit-and-run death of man found on road in 2012 to be reinvestigated

Ian Brown was discovered by a taxi driver hours after he left a work day out to walk home.

The death of a man whose body was found on a road in South Ayrshire in 2012 is to be reinvestigated by police.

Ian Brown, from Dailly, was discovered by a taxi driver on the B734 Girvan to Dailly Road around 3am on Saturday, July 28, 2012.

The 48-year-old had left a work day out with colleagues in Girvan around 12.20am to walk home, a distance of around seven miles.

There were possible sightings of him walking home, the last being just after 1am, but his movements between 1am and 3am remain unaccounted for.

Mr Brown’s death was investigated as a hit-and-run incident at the time, with officers pursuing several lines of inquiry since.

Anonymous letter

An anonymous letter was sent to police in 2013, providing “useful information”, but the vehicle believed to have struck Mr Brown has never been traced, and no arrests have been made.

Police have urged the person who wrote the letter to get back in touch.

Following a review, the circumstances surrounding the death are now being reinvestigated by a team comprising of road policing, local division and Major Incident Team officers.

The force believes answers surrounding the death lie within the community and has urged anyone with information to get in touch.

‘Information lies within the community’

Detective superintendent Craig Riddell said: “Officers are determined to find out what happened to Ian Brown and provide answers for his family.

“I believe there are those in the community who may have vital information which can assist our new investigation.

“I would urge anyone who has information, even if they do not believe it to be significant, to get in touch with the inquiry team as a matter of urgency.

“In 2013 we received an anonymous letter which provided officers with useful information and I would appeal to the person who wrote that letter to contact me.

“Police Scotland can be contacted on 101 or information can be given anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
