Plans for the biggest Poundland in the UK have been unveiled with Scotland to become home to the “supersized” store.

The discount retailer announced the development alongside 50 new locations across the country set to open over the next nine months creating up to 800 jobs.

Poundland said five stores will open in the next few weeks, including the huge store at Crown Street Retail Park in Glasgow.

At 18,380 square feet, the Glasgow shop will be the largest in Britain and is set to welcome customers in March.

As part of the overhaul plans, Poundland said it would generate around 750 to 800 jobs but it did not give any details any potential staff impact from store relocations.

Poundland managing director Barry Williams said: “We have to step up our search for the best locations to bring the best of Poundland to customers across the UK and that’s precisely what we’ll do in 2023.

“We will continue to work hard to find the right locations that suit the range of Poundland formats we now offer – from small neighbourhood convenience stores to our large destination stores.”

Eight stores are set to open between January and March with a further 26 between April and June, and more to launch once agreements on lease negotiations are secured.

It adds to the 18 stores the chain opened between October and December, including eight on December 10.
