Glasgow Uber driver who 'hung child on a door' refused new licence

An Uber driver who hung a child on a door has been refused permission to work in Glasgow by licensing chiefs.

Abdul Kargbo was found guilty of three charges of assaulting a child and jailed for nine months, the city’s licensing committee heard.

Police Scotland objected to his bid to renew his private hire car and private hire car driver’s licences, arguing he is “not a fit and proper person”.

Mr Kargbo claimed they were “false allegations” and he is a “good person”. Both licence applications were rejected by councillors.

The committee heard from Police Scotland that the driver had been convicted in March 2023 on “three charges of assault with a child aggravation”.

An inspector said the incidents had taken place between January 2012 and September 2016 and included striking a child to the body “using a cable, belt or similar item” as well as “hitting and dragging” them.

They also included “hanging” a child “on a door”. Councillors were told Mr Kargbo had been sentenced to nine months imprisonment.

Cllr Alex Wilson, SNP, the licensing committee chairman, said: “This doesn’t make good reading, what have you got to say for yourself?”

Mr Kargbo said: “I’m a good person. I have been a taxi driver for many years. Zero complaints, zero fights, zero arguments, zero points on my licence.”

The driver added he had carried out more than 40,000 trips as an Uber driver and “maintained a high rating throughout my time”.

He claimed the incidents were “lies” and he believes “the truth will come out”.
