A Glasgow staple has been deemed the “best kebab house in Scotland” at the 11th British Kebab Awards.

Shawarma King took home the top prize for the second year in a row, with the team describing their win as “nothing short of astounding”.

The family-run takeaway’s owners are first generation immigrants, and feel “strongly about the welcoming attitude that Glasgow has to them not just as a business, but as people too”.

Thanking customers for their support on social media, the King Street establishment said: “It’s crazy really. We are just a wee kebab shop and to see the response that we have had over the last year to our wraps has been nothing short of astounding.

“We just want to say a massive thank you to everyone who voted for us, supported us, bought food from us, time and time again over the last year.

“People have been coming from all over the place to try out our wraps. London, Inverness, Yorkshire, Preston to name a few. Insane.”

Anticipating an onslaught of customers following its win, the team asked customers for their patience.

MP for Glasgow Central, Alison Thewliss, congratulated Shawarma King on social media, writing: “Congratulations to Glasgow’s finest.”

Held annually, the awards are billed as “a chance to recognise and champion the efforts of local kebab takeaways and restaurants across the nation”.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said: “Hospitality in all its forms plays a critical role in supporting our economy as well as communities and high streets right across the UK.

“Kebabs are as much a part of our culture and heritage as fish and chips and curries, reflecting our broad diversity and our nation’s love of food.

“I know it has been a very difficult few years, but I am confident that the sector can and will play a leading role in the UK’s recovery, and help us deliver the growth we want to see right across the country.”
