Glasgow Subway stations hit by escalator failures amid maintenance issues

Escalators at several Glasgow Subway stations are out of order following a failure by the maintenance contractor to “deliver on their contractual obligations”.

According to Strathclyde Partnership for Transport, the escalators are not working at six stations as of Wednesday, September 30.

These include: St Enoch, Buchanan Street, Kelvinbridge, Partick, St Georges Cross and Hillhead.

Travellers on the subway’s inner and outer circle will still be able to access the platforms via the stairs.

A statement from SPT read: “Due to a failure by our escalator maintainer, Otis, to deliver on their contractual obligations, we have had to suspend eight escalators.

“Escalators affected include: St Enoch, Buchanan Street, Kelvinbridge, Partick, St Georges Cross and Hillhead. All station platforms are still accessible.

“This has been raised as a matter of urgency with Otis, and we are continuing to work with them to find a speedy resolution. We apologise to all our customers for the inconvenience caused.”

Manufacturer Otis said: “Otis is aware of the issue and will continue to work closely with Strathclyde Partnership for Transport to return the escalators to service as soon as possible.”
