Passengers travelling on Glasgow’s Subway can now use contactless payments.
Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) confirmed the new contactless Pay As You Go (PAYG) system is operational after a number of months of testing.
The new system aims to offer a “faster and more flexible” service for passengers, and will automatically calculate the cheapest fare.
Customers will either be charged for a single or return journey, and any additional journeys in the same day will not be charged.
A weekly cap also applies, with passengers paying no more than the cost of a weekly season ticket for any number of journeys in any Monday to Sunday period.
That applies if the same card or device is used to tap in and out of the ticket gates.
SPT said it had seen a significant shift from cash to debit and credit card payments since 2020.
Michael Nimmo, ticketing manager at SPT, said: “The introduction of contactless enables customers to travel using the convenience of a debit card, credit card or mobile wallet while also benefiting from daily and weekly price caps.
“Customers will be able to simply tap through the Subway gates with a payment card or mobile wallet, and their card will be charged depending on the number of journeys made.”
