A restaurant in Glasgow has won Best Kebab House in Scotland for the fourth year at the British Kebab Awards.

Shawarma King, located on King Street in Glasgow, was dubbed Best Kebab House in Scotland at the British Kebab Awards ceremony in London.

Majed Baerekhan, owner of the Glasgow business, told STV News it felt “amazing” to win the award for the fourth time in a row.

While Mr Baerekhan wouldn’t reveal the secret to the family-run businesses’ success, he said high-quality meat was incredibly important.

“We marinate the meat with out recipes the day before selling, the meat gets enough flavour,” he said.

The fan voted category saw the business go up against nine other Scottish restaurants including the likes of Hajar’s Shawarma and BABS in Glasgow.

Mr Baerekhan thanked customers for their support, saying: “Without your support we’re nothing, we’re glad we’re in the right place.”

Customers at the shop on Thursday praised it’s “delicious” kebabs.

“We usually come here, most times we pass by I can’t help but buy one cause it smells and tastes so good,” one customer told STV News.

Supporters also took to social media to celebrate the win, with one writing: “You work so hard to bring us the best shawarma in the UK by far.

“Delighted that you chose Glasgow to open your business. We are fortunate to have you here.”

Another customer added: “Superb, what an amazing record. Totally deserved. The best and our family favourite.”

Shawarma King was one of two Scottish businesses to be recognised at the awards show with Memed Barbecue Grill and Meze Bar in Edinburgh being “highly commended”.

Burwell Kebab Van in Cambridge was named Kebab Van of the Year, while Master Kebabs in Gillingham and Zem Kebab in High Wycombe both won Best Regional Takeaway.

Ibrahim Dogus, founder of the British Kebab Awards, said the winners at the awards show highlighted the “strength of the industry, with great restaurants, vans and takeaways” in every corner of the nation.

“Chefs are constantly reinventing and refining the classic kebab, meaning there’s something new from each one of this year’s worthy winners,” he added.

“This year’s winners represent everything that makes the British kebab industry special – diversity, quality, tradition, and innovation, and we’re proud to be highlighting the leaders in this great industry.”
