A teacher who got drunk and passed out at an induction day for new staff has been banned from the profession.
Che Yeung was attending the induction day organised by Glasgow City Council in August 2022 when he drank a “large amount” of alcohol including shots.
He was found unresponsive with his head flat on a table around 12.45pm with first aiders called to help.
Mr Yeung was found to have a water bottle full of gin in his possession.
The secondary school physics teacher had to be helped to his wife’s car due to his intoxication.
Mr Yeung said he had started drinking at lunchtime due to a “cumulation of pressures” including that he felt the induction day was a repeat of content he had already been told and was concerned it was a “waste of time”.
An investigation by the General Teaching Council for Scotland heard that Mr Yeung gave incorrect statements the following day by saying that he had “only had a couple of drinks”.
His offer of employment was withdrawn.
He has since admitted the allegations and is working outside of teaching.
A report by the GTCS added that Mr Yeung’s behaviour fell “well below that to be expected of a teacher” and he “failed to demonstrate professionalism, honesty, and integrity”.
They added: “He has acted dishonestly or lacked integrity. The teacher provided false information to a colleague and has failed to act as a role model.”
It was concluded that his fitness to teach is currently impaired.
