As sub-zero temperatures hit Glasgow, the city is offering warm rooms where people can escape the cold and get a free tea or coffee.

Libraries provide cosy spaces that are welcome places for residents looking to drop in for heat, as fuel poverty is a major problem in the city.

Seven more venues run by other organisations have also joined Glasgow City Council and Glasgow Life to offer refreshments.

They are Finns Place, Homestart, The Scottish Fire and Rescue, Brighter Baillieston, Love Milton, Tollcross Housing Association and Kingsway.

SNP councillor Ruairi Kelly, city convener for housing, development, built heritage and land use, said: “We are delighted to be able to work in partnership with our third sector groups again to offer a warm and welcoming environment to anyone across the city in need of some respite.

“Wintery conditions can be challenging for so many of our residents, and we want people to know that there is a place in their local community where they can pop along, meet others, and access advice and support.”

It is understood refreshments will be available up until March 31.

An update on welcome places will be presented to the council’s operational performance and delivery scrutiny committee next week as part of a report on the council’s goal to reduce poverty and inequality in communities.

A council report explaining more about the scheme said the network of welcome places “provide access to a warm, welcoming and safe space that supports citizens to reduce fuel costs, build social connections and secure support and advice.”

It added: “All Glasgow Libraries continue to offer refreshments as part of the Welcome Places approach between November 14 and March 31, in line with the end of the winter 2024 to 2025 period. Where required, additional programmed activity aimed at families has been provided at libraries to support the cost-of-living crisis.”
