Labour councillor arrested and charged in connection with stalking offences

Former Glasgow Lord Provost Philip Braat has been suspended by the Scottish Labour Party.

A senior Labour councillor and former Lord Provost of Glasgow has been charged in connection with stalking offences.

Philip Braat has been an elected member since 2007 and currently represents the Anderston, City, Yorkhill ward.

It is understood he has been suspended by Labour pending the outcome of the investigation.

A Labour Party spokesperson said: “The Labour Party takes all complaints seriously. 
 
“They are fully investigated in line with our rules and procedures, and any appropriate action is taken.”

The 48-year-old was arrested on Wednesday, October 23, Police Scotland said.

He is due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

Braat has worked part-time as a parliamentary caseworker for Maureen Burke MP.

He is a member of the Law Society of Scotland. He became deputy Lord Provost of Glasgow in 2017 before being named Lord Provost in 2020.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “A 48-year-old man was arrested and charged on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, in connection with stalking offences.

“A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal and he is expected to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court at a later date.”
