Glasgow event cancelled amid 'unofficial after party' fears following anti-immigration rally

A Glasgow event has been cancelled amid fears of an “unofficial after party” after an anti-immigration rally in the city.

A daytime club event called the Grand Awakening, organised by anti-vaxxer John Watt, who has previously spoken at anti-immigration demonstrations, was due to take place at 5pm on Saturday, following the Unite the Clans rally on Glasgow Green.

The organiser stated that the event was for bringing “like-minded” and “awake” people together.

Following a BBC Disclosure documentary it was revealed that Mr Watt was convicted of abusing two of his former partners in 2018.

The Classic Grand venue has since confirmed that the event has been cancelled after concerns were “raised” regarding the possibility of it becoming associated with the protest.

In a post on social media it explained: “Since the event was confirmed, a rally has been announced for Glasgow Green. Concerns have since been raised that the event could be perceived as an unofficial after-party associated with that rally.

“The Classic Grand believes that music and live events should be welcoming and inclusive for everyone. In light of these concerns, we have taken the decision to inform the promoter that the event will not be going ahead at our venue on Saturday.

“We appreciate your understanding and thank you for your continued support.”

The event organiser took to his page to explain that he did not believe the Grand Awakening was a racist or far-right event, adding that music was “the best way to bring people together”.

He claimed that more than 100 tickets were sold for the dance event.

Mr Watt added: “I’m sorry to everyone who bought a ticket.

“I’m down a good amount of money. I’ve put a lot of effort into this.”
