Glasgow buildings overlooking M8 could be demolished to make way for student housing

Glasgow buildings overlooking the M8 are to be demolished to make way for student flats if planning permission is granted.

Student housing is to be built at 93 to 113 St George’s Road on a site currently occupied by the Q Club Snooker Club, Pure Gym, offices and other businesses.

The facade of St George’s Studios is to be retained at the plot on the edge of the city near Charring Cross.

Replacement plans include 314 student bedrooms as well as a lobby, yoga studio, gym, lounges and study rooms among other facilities.

According to design documents, typical studios would measure 18.5 square metres with a double bed, kitchenette, en suite bathroom, cupboard space and desk or sofa area.

The accommodation would also be available for short stays outside term time.

A design statement said the proposals involve “redevelopment of land on St George’s Road, containing three existing buildings; an office building, a snooker hall and a gym.

“The proposals will provide 314 purpose-built student accommodation studios, internal amenity space, new landscaping and a commercial unit on the ground floor”.

The application to Glasgow City Council for demolition said the existing buildings have been assessed and found “unsuitable for adaptation”.

It said: “The demolition of the existing buildings on site with retention of the St Georges Studio façade, will enable the site to be brought back into productive use.”

The planning application submitted by Albert Investment Co (Commercial) Ltd is to be considered by the council.
