Glasgow Bridge has been closed to all traffic, and a large police presence has descended upon the city centre amid reported protests.

As of 8.20pm on Tuesday, Glasgow City Council confirmed that emergency services are at the scene, with the bridge shut to vehicles while the incident is dealt with.

It comes as dozens of police officers, riot vans, and a police helicopter were deployed in Glasgow city centre, with a huge presence in the centre of the city’s main shopping area on Buchanan Street.

It is understood to be related to an anti-immigration demonstration organised in response to Monday night’s attempted murder in Belfast.

A demonstration linked to the stabbing attack was held near the city’s Concert Hall, with protestors marching from the city centre down to the River Clyde.

A cordon is in place at St Enoch subway station, with more than 30 officers at the scene.

Motorists are being advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes where possible.

There is no indication yet of how long the closure will remain in place.

Drivers are urged to allow extra time for their journeys and follow any diversion routes or instructions from emergency services.
