Glasgow Airport operator rules out name change after councillors floated the idea to mark the 60th anniversary

Glasgow Airport’s operator has ruled out any potential name change proposed by councillors to celebrate the airport’s 60th anniversary.

Councillor Janis McDonald praised the airport’s contribution and long history of community activity at a meeting of the full Renfrewshire Council last week.

Councillor Andy Doig floated the idea of launching a public consultation on renaming the travel hub.

He suggested naming the airport after Scottish singer-songwriter Gerry Rafferty, best known for his hit single “Stuck in the Middle with You” as part of Stealers Wheel.

He cited other airports, such as those in Liverpool and Belfast, which have been renamed after famous figures John Lennon and George Best.

Council leader Iain Nicolson noted that the airport’s name has been a topic of discussion and said: “It’s a valid issue to explore further”.

However, he raised concerns that the airport’s owners, AGS Airports, could refuse to take the motion forward.

Mr Nicolson also questioned how the consultation would be carried out, including who would be consulted, how it would be managed, and the costs.

Other councillors highlighted the importance of the “Glasgow Airport” brand in competing with Edinburgh and Manchester.

Eventually, Mr Doig withdrew his amendment, believing that discussions with the airport owners would be the best course of action.

STV News contacted AGS Airports to ask if they would consider a possible name change.

A spokesperson said: “We welcome the council’s motion recognising the important role Glasgow Airport has played in supporting connectivity, jobs and investment across the region during its 60th anniversary year.

“Glasgow Airport has no plans to change its name and remains focused on serving passengers and supporting economic growth across the west of Scotland.”
