Ginger tabby cat banned from college killed on road

Rebel had become a beloved visitor around Glasgow Clyde College’s Cardonald campus

A ginger tabby cat that became a beloved visitor to a Scottish college has died after being hit by a vehicle.

Rebel had been wandering the corridors of Glasgow Clyde College’s Cardonald campus, entering lessons and was alleged to have set off an alarm.

Despite being adored by staff and students, in February, he was barred from entering campus buildings – for his own safety.

But on Thursday, April 2, Rebel’s owners told STV News that he had been killed in a road traffic collision.

His family are “devastated” but wanted to make those at the College aware in case they were looking out for him.

They also thanked everyone for the generosity and kindness Rebel received while visiting.

A spokesperson at Glasgow Clyde College said: “We were very sad to learn that Rebel has passed.

“He became infamous at Cardonald campus, and a much-loved furry friend who will be greatly missed by students and staff. Our hearts go out to Rebel’s family.”

“As cute as he is, for the cat’s own safety and well-being, please don’t feed him or encourage him to loiter as he has started to enter the building.”

Students and staff had grown fond of the cat, known to visit from 9am to 4pm.

One said: “He just wants to explore. He likes the attention. He is very happy-go-lucky.”

Some students would like a hut to be built for Rebel outside.

Previously, a spokesperson for Glasgow Clyde College said: “We’re really proud that all our campuses are inviting, friendly spaces – but sadly we can’t extend that welcome to cats inside college buildings.

“The four-legged visitor, called Rebel, is a familiar face on the grounds outside Cardonald, and lately he’s been keen to see what goes on indoors.

“We hope he enjoyed his little campus adventure, and I’m sure he’ll be back outside soon.”
