Gas cylinders and other equipment were discovered outside a bank following an attempted ATM raid in East Dunbartonshire.
Police are now on the hunt for those involved after the incident outside Santander in Kirkintilloch’s Cowgate led to nearby residents being evacuated from their homes.
The alarm was raised at around 4.49am on Monday.
The road, between West High Street and Catherine Street, was locked down and closed to all vehicles and pedestrians.
Police evacuated nearby properties “as a precaution” while the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service made the crime scene safe.
There was no threat to the wider public and extensive enquiries are now under way, including a review of CCTV in the area.
Investigating officers are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
Detective inspector Clark Hill, of Greater Glasgow CID, said: “We are keen to hear from anyone who may have been in the Cowgate area of Kirkintilloch between 2am and 4.50am.
“Anyone who may have been in the immediate area in a vehicle fitted with a dashcam is asked to check their device to see if it might contain any footage which would assist this enquiry.”
