Game of thrones 'dragon' takes to the skies above Glasgow

A dragon from Game of Thrones has taken to the skies above Glasgow to mark the start of the Commonwealth Games in the city.

Syrax, the dragon of Rhaenyra Targaryen, played by Emma D’Arcy, has been spotted flying in the skies above the SEC and the Hydro between 8 and 9am on Wednesday.

The mythical beast is currently starring in season three of HBO hit House of the Dragon, and was originally created and flew in London for the launch of the show.

Incorporating 3D scans from the series production, the animatronic is made up of 23 dexterous moving parts and was brought to life by German aeronautic pioneers Airstage.

It has realistic movement across an eight-metre wingspan as well as both the head and tail, while flight is achieved with intricate impellers built into its legs.

The model, which weighs 13kg, was built over three months and almost 3,000 hours by a highly specialist team and was constructed from vacuum-formed Depron foam around a carbon fibre and aluminium skeleton.

The details and texture were then finished by hand with airbrushed paintwork.
