More than a dozen speed cameras across the west of Scotland will be turned off after driver behaviour improved.

On Monday, Police Scotland revealed the sites where 16 cameras were set to become inactive.

The force said the decision follows an evidence-based assessment of sites operated by the West Safety Camera Unit.

Locations can be deemed dormant when they have met safety objectives, when road engineering changes make enforcement unnecessary, or where cameras are no longer shown to reduce collisions or speeding.

The review concluded that the listed sites no longer meet the criteria for active enforcement.

The camera infrastructure and signs will remain in place, but a bag will be placed over any fixed camera to show that it is not in use.

The pause allows for a thorough assessment over a three-year period, after which decisions will be made regarding potential decommissioning or reactivation of safety cameras.

Alan Bowater, manager of the West Safety Camera Unit, said authorities would continue monitoring road safety data.

He said: ‘We are conscious that this process can cause concern within the wider community.

“Where sites are going into, or are currently in dormancy, we will continue to monitor speeds and collision statistics and if there is a significant upturn enforcement will recommence.’

Mobile enforcement sites will enter dormancy immediately, while fixed cameras will follow in the coming weeks. Once sites are no longer operational, they will be removed from the official camera location map.

Further details on camera locations and safety initiatives are available via the national safety camera programme website.
