No trains are running on a route in North Lanarkshire on a second day of disruption after a sinkhole appeared on the railway tracks.
Network Rail engineers detected the one-metre deep fault between Caldercruix and Drumgelloch on Sunday which led to cancellation of services.
Significant amounts of ballast were washed away and the operator said it was unlikely the line between Airdrie and Bathgate would reopen first thing on Monday.
ScotRail have confirmed there are no direct services from Edinburgh to Milngavie running, with the line expected to be shut for the duration of Monday.
Between Helensburgh and Airdrie, services will run every 30 minutes during peak times and hourly outwith peak times.
The Edinburgh to Bathgate route will also run every half an hour during peak times and every hour outwith.
ScotRail said services between Milngavie and Glasgow are not affected by the line closure.
Replacement bus services will run on the closed line, between Airdrie and Bathgate.
A Network Rail post on X on Sunday evening read: “We’ve just caught up with our engineers working on the incident at Caldercruix.
“They’re making good progress in diverting the underground spring, but until that’s done, and the flooding clear, we can’t assess the full extent of the damage.
“The team will work through the night, but we don’t expect the railway between Airdrie and Bathgate to reopen tomorrow.
“Thanks for your patience if you normally use this route, we know it’s been a very disruptive day.”
A ScotRail statement read: “Due to reports of a sinkhole, engineering work will continue on site between Caldercruix and Drumgelloch.
“A specialist engineer will be on site today at approximately 9am and further investigations will take place.”
