Four Ugandan boxers 'missing' in Scotland after Commonwealth Games

Four Ugandan boxers are reportedly missing in Scotland following the Commonwealth Games.

Ugandan sports website NBS Sports reported athletes Angel Katushabe, Nuhu Batte, Ibrahim Khemis and Emily Nakalema failed to join the rest of the team and return home.

They were part of the boxing team participating at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The 2026 Games came to a close on Sunday, after 11 days of sporting events in the city.

It’s not the first time Ugandan athletes have disappeared during international competition.

Several athletes failed to return following the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia.

While two Ugandan rugby sevens players, Benon Kizza and Philip Pariyo, also went missing after Glasgow 2014.

They claimed asylum and moved to Cardiff.

The Ministry of Education and Sports in Uganda is expected to issue further updates.

Police Scotland has confirmed it has received reports of athletes unaccounted for and enquiries are ongoing.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Police Scotland has received reports of several athletes who are unaccounted for.

“Enquiries are ongoing to assess the circumstances, and early engagement is taking place with the Home Office.”

The Home Office said: “The Home Office takes all necessary steps to prevent people who could abuse the immigration system from entering the UK.

“Whilst we do not routinely comment on individual cases, all asylum claims are considered on their individual merits in accordance with our international obligations.

“This includes carrying out enhanced checks on people ahead of major events. We also work with event sponsors to strengthen controls on who can enter the UK for these events.

“Should the Home Office be made aware of any breaches of immigration law we will take action accordingly.”
