SNS GroupA former soldier who subjected a woman to sexual and physical attacks during a campaign of domestic abuse has been jailed.
David Law, 34, was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment at the High Court in Glasgow on Wednesday.
He had earlier been found guilty of engaging in a course of abusive behaviour in 2022 and 2023.
Locations in the charge included Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Dundee, Tenerife in Spain, and Mauritius.
This involved shouting, swearing, threats and damaging property.
Law, of the city’s Maryhill, also hounded the woman by phone, refused to let her leave her home at times and demanded to know who she was with.
The physical violence saw the traumatised victim have a lit cigarette burned on her.
He also hurled a suitcase at her, shoved her to the floor and struck the woman on the head.
The sex attacks took place at a guest house in Dumfries.
Describing what Law had done, Judge Bruce Erroch KC told him: “You committed acts which might in substance, but not in legal name, amount to rape.
“A victim impact statement has been submitted – there has been an emotional and psychological effect. The woman has needed counselling for anxiety.
“You continue to deny any physical abuse or perpetrating any sexually harmful behaviour.
“You have displayed what has been described as ‘victim blaming’.
“You maintain that it was the woman who was manipulative and controlling.”
Law was also put on the sex offenders list and has been banned from going near the victim, both for an indefinite period.
Graeme Brown, defending, earlier told the hearing: “He maintains his position (of denial) as he did at the trial.
“He still has a supportive family behind him.”
