A former Rangers player has made a second bid to open a pub close to Ibrox stadium after his first attempt was blocked by planners.

Scott Arfield is looking to transform a bookmaker that has stood vacant on Copland Road for two years.

Glasgow City Council turned down his first application over concerns over its location in a residential area.

In a second attempt to have the plans approved, Arfield has argued that the building doesn’t hold any architectural or historical merit and the design “would be in keeping with the style of the building”.

An application states that the pub wouldn’t be open seven days and wouldn’t used for live music.

It goes on: “Public houses are an accepted part of the social fabric of this country but they have been in rapid decline.

“This proposal will help meet the needs of local people and it should be noted that across the city there are countless examples of public houses located beneath tenements.

“The previous application referred to above received only one objection from the 39 people notified. This indicates that the proposal is acceptable to local people.”

One objection has been submitted against the latest application by a neighbour of the property.

It describes the area as “residential” and “hard pressed with little resources for families and children”.

It adds: “Fast food and alcohol seem to be predominant, catering for only football supporters.”

The application is set to be reviewed by Glasgow City Council planners.
