Former Lib Dem leader Tim Farron has compared Boris Johnson to Celtic saying "anyone can win a title when the opposition is abysmal".

Farron, who supports English Championship side Blackburn Rovers, said that both the PM and the Scottish Premiership champions will also be "humiliated in Europe".

The 49-year-old, who has been MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale since 2005, was replying to a Tweet praising Johnson's election campaign when he said: "You are half right at best - BJ and DC (Boris Johnson and Dominic Cummings) are basically Celtic: anyone can win the title if your opposition is abysmal... and then you get humiliated in Europe."

Celtic fans were quick to respond to the Tweet informing Farron that their club topped their Europa League group with home and away wins over Serie A side Lazio.

He later Tweeted: "I’ve been slagged off for making a half-baked football analogy.

"I am a Blackburn Rovers fan, once knocked out of the Europa League by Celtic - I was there. The Tweet was meant to be a dig at Labour and the Lib Dems... ah well.

"Anyhow, I’m currently on the Glasgow train... what could possibly go wrong."

Celtic defeated Blackburn 3-0 on aggregate on their way to the UEFA Cup final in 2003.

Farron was leader of the Liberal Democrats between 2015 and 2017.
