Former Glasgow care home could be partially demolished to make way for apartments

A former care home in the west end of Glasgow will be partially demolished to make way for apartments and other homes on the grounds, if plans are approved.

The nursing home closed in 2023 and the 1874 C-listed property on the corner of Great Western Road and Cleveden Road has been empty since.

A planning application has now been submitted to Glasgow City Council to transform historic Balmanno House and its grounds into 12 new homes.

A design statement on the bid said: “The proposal is to sensitively convert the listed building from a care home to two residential flats, demolish the existing poor quality extensions and buildings in the grounds and introduce new residential flats and mews houses into the grounds along with enhancements to landscaping.”

It added: “The sensitive conversion will allow the house to have similar prominence as they would have had originally and require minimal change to the original layout with any later alterations made good.”

The proposals would also see an extension knocked down and replaced with three apartments. Another seven town houses are to be built at the rear of the site and designs show 11 car parking spaces.

The council has yet to make a decision on the planning application from RSD Property Holdings.
