Swinney congratulates Donald Trump on his US election victory

Trump claimed he had won the race in an address to supporters at his watch party in Florida, however the winner has not been officially called.

First Minister John Swinney has congratulated Donald Trump on his election as US President.

In a post on X he wrote: “Congratulations to President-elect Trump on his election.

“Scotland and the USA share many social, cultural and economic links.

“In that relationship, we will stand fast in support of our values of fairness, democracy and equality – ideals that America was built upon.”

It comes after Donald Trump declared victory in the US presidential election in a speech to supporters at his watch party in Florida.

However, the winner of the election has not been officially called yet.

Trump was joined by his family and running mate, JD Vance, as he thanked the crowd, describing this as “the greatest political movement in all time”.

The former president took an early lead in the hours after the first polls closed in CNN projections.
