Firefighters have worked through the night to try and contain a blaze which broke out in a shop in Rutherglen, leading to a number of roads being closed.
More than 100 firefighters and 22 appliances were called out on Thursday night after the fire began in a Nisa Local shop located beneath tenement flats in the South Lanarkshire town.
Images on social media showed smoke billowing from the shop as firefighters surrounded the building.
Members of the public have been urged to stay away from the area.
Crews remained at the scene on Friday morning.
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Firefighters remain at the scene of a fire on Baronald Street in Rutherglen.
“We were alerted at 6.19pm on Thursday, May 7, to reports of a building fire.
“Operations control have mobilised 22 fire appliances and additional resources to the scene of the fire which is affecting the basement of a commercial property within a four-storey tenement building.
“Nearby residents are asked to continue keeping windows and doors closed as a precautionary measure, and people are asked to stay clear of the area.”
Police Scotland said: “Emergency services are in attendance following a fire at a shop premises in Baronald Street, Rutherglen, which was reported at 6.40pm on Thursday, May 7, 2026.
“Baronald Street along with Dalmarnock Road and Farmeloan Road are currently closed.
“Members of the public are asked to avoid the area at this time.”
