Firefighters remain at the scene of a blaze at an abandoned building in Lanarkshire nearly 20 hours since it took hold.

Emergency services were called to the Chapel Street area of Airdrie around 5.20pm on Friday following reports of the fire.

Fire crews were sent to the scene where they remain into Saturday afternoon.

The building is understood to be derelict and there are currently no reports of any injuries.

The road has been closed while the incident is ongoing.

A spokesperson for Scottish Fire and Rescue confirmed they had been mobilised at a building fire around 5.10pm on April 5.

They confirmed crews still remain at the scene as of 12pm.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 5.20pm on Friday, 5 April, 2024, police received a report of a fire at an abandoned building in the Chapel Street area of Airdrie.

“Officers are assisting the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service at the scene and the road is currently closed.”
