Firefighters remain at the scene of a huge blaze which broke out at a Glasgow hotel on Saturday evening.

Seven fire engines and two high-reach appliances were dispatched to the “well-developed” fire on the fourth floor of the Revolver Hotel on Virginia Street after it was reported at around 6.20pm on December 27.

The Trades Hall, House of Gods hotel and the Homeless Project Scotland base were evacuated as a precaution.

Glassford Street was also closed to traffic during the height of the emergency but has since reopened, though the pedestrian footpath remains cordoned off.

There were no reports of any casualties.

A statement from the Revolver Hotel on Instagram said the fire was “promptly and effectively” managed by the fire service, thanking them for their “swift response” and praising staff for their “calm and exemplary handling of the situation”.

Mike Baxter, co-founder of the neighbouring House of Gods hotel, confirmed that all guests and staff were safe but the extent of damage is not yet known.

“Emergency services attended immediately and we’re incredibly grateful for their swift response.

“Our team acted with exceptional professionalism and I’m incredibly proud of everyone involved and thank our guests affected for their understanding.

“What we don’t know is the extent of any damage to House of Gods, we continue to monitor the situation closely and will share updates when they become available.

“We at this time have no information regarding the situation next door and our thoughts are with them.”

Glasgow Labour MP Paul Sweeney posted on X: “Awful to see a fire break out in the roof of the Revolver Hotel and Polo Lounge.

“I hope no-one is hurt and the fire can be contained.

“The old Scottish Legal Life Building by Alexander Skirving dates from 1889 and is one of Glasgow’s earliest red sandstone commercial buildings.”

He later praised the “heroic work” of firefighters for containing the blaze “on the brink of consuming one of Glasgow’s finest Victorian commercial buildings.”

The SFRS confirmed crews are continuing to secure the area and that an investigation will be launched in the coming days.

A spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 6.19pm on Saturday, 27 December to reports of a fire within a commercial premises on Virginia Street, Glasgow.

“Operations Control mobilised six appliances to the scene and firefighters extinguished a fire affecting the fourth floor of a four-storey building.

“Residents of nearby buildings were evacuated at the height of the fire as a precautionary measure, and all persons were accounted for.

“There were no reported casualties. One appliance remains on scene to dampen down hot spots.

“An investigation to establish the cause of fire will commence in the coming days”.
