Firefighters tackled a “well-developed” blaze at a car garage in Uddingston overnight.

Emergency services were called to the fire on Bothwell Road just after 6pm on Monday.

Footage on social media showed large plumes of smoke billowing from the building, before the roof of a petrol station appeared to collapse.

Customers were asked to leave a nearby Tesco while emergency services tackled the flames ripping through the neighbouring building.

Six fire engines, along with one high-reach vehicle, were sent at the height of the fire.

Firefighters worked through the night to bring the incident under control before leaving the scene around 9.30am on Tuesday.

One man was treated at the scene. There were no other reports of injuries, police said.

One eyewitness told STV News that they could hear “loud bangs” and “windows smashing” as the blaze burst through the roof.

They said: “It was just smoking when I arrived, came out of Tesco to flames. All Tesco has been evacuated. Roads are closed, and five fire engines are there.”

A BP petrol station located close to the scene was also evacuated.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 6pm on Monday, April 27, to reports of a commercial building fire on Bothwell Road, Uddingston.

“At its height, six appliances, one high-reach vehicle and specialist resources were mobilised to the scene, where firefighters worked overnight to extinguish the fire affecting a mechanical garage.

“There were no casualties, and crews left at approximately 9.30am on Tuesday, 28 April, after ensuring the area was safe.”

Police later confirmed Bothwell Road had reopened and that the fire was not being treated as wilful.

Tesco has also been contacted for comment.
