Fire crews have rushed to a university building in Glasgow following a “small explosion”.

The incident reportedly took place within a science building at the University of Strathclyde, on Cathedral Street.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said there had been a spillage of hazardous materials, and no signs of fire or smoke.

No injuries have been reported as a result.

Police are assisting fire crews with traffic management in the area, and a number of road closures have been placed in the city centre.

These are at North Hanover Street to George Street; North Frederick Street to George Street; George Street to Montrose Street; and High Street to Cathedral Street

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 3.54pm on June 5 to reports of a fire at a property in Cathedral Street.

“Operations Control mobilised eight appliances to the scene where crews were met with a spillage of hazardous materials.

“Crews currently remain in attendance. There are no reported casualties.”

Inspector Gary Montgomerie said: “We would ask drivers to use an alternative route, and people should avoid the area to allow emergency services access.

“There is no immediate threat to the public.”

The Scottish Ambulance Service has been approached for comment.
