Public urged to avoid area as firefighters battle recycling centre blaze

Fire crews have raced to the scene of a blaze which broke out at a recycling centre in Inverclyde.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to reports of a fire at Inverclyde Council’s recycling and waste centre on Pottery Street, Greenock on Saturday morning.

Three appliances are at the scene of the blaze, including one high reach appliance.

Images on social media showed huge plumes of smoke erupting from the site around 10.15am.

Police said East Hamilton Street is closed at Pottery Street, Ratho Street and Gibshill Road due to the blaze. A diversion has been put in place via Gibshill Road. 

In a statement, police said: “There is no wider risk to the public. Local residents are advised to close all windows and doors as a precaution and members of the public are asked to avoid the area.”
