Fire crews have left a landfill site that went up in flames and raged throughout the night.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) sent four appliances to Greengairs Landfill Site, Airdrie, North Lanarkshire, on Sunday at about 6.51pm, following reports of a fire.
Residents and motorists were told to keep their windows shut and turn off air conditioning while firefighters tackled the blaze.
On Monday at 8.03am, SFRS said the area had been “made safe” as the appliances and firefighters left.
An SFRS spokesman said: “We were alerted at 6.51pm on Sunday, August 18, to reports of a fire in the open at Meikle Drumgray Road, Airdrie.
“Operations control mobilised four appliances to the scene of a fire on a landfill.
“Crews worked overnight and left the scene at 8.03am on Monday after ensuring the area was made safe.
“There were no casualties.”
The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) said the site remains closed while the operator, FCC Environment confirms the fire is out and they can resume operations.
Residents and drivers have also been told it is now safe to open windows and use air conditioning.
A SEPA spokesman said: “Our priority is to ensure that the fire is fully extinguished and that there has been no damage to critical site infrastructure before operations recommence.
“We are satisfied the operator is taking reasonable actions to address the incident.
“The operator will be required to submit a full report to SEPA in due course and officers will follow up any regulatory actions as required.”
FCC Environment was contacted for comment.
