A father and son have been charged with attempted murder after an on-duty policeman was hit by a car in Hamilton.

The 33-year-old officer had approached the car while on patrol on Low Waters Road in Hamilton around 1pm on Friday.

The vehicle then made off and was involved in a collision with the officer.

Douglas Mills Senior, 56, and Douglas Mills Junior, 30, were arrested in connection with the incident.

They appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Wednesday where they faced charges of assault to severe injury and danger to life and a charge of attempted murder.

Mills Jnr, of Hamilton, and Mills Snr, of Glasgow, made no plea and were remanded in custody.

They are due to appear before the court again in the next eight days.

Police Scotland said the officer remains in hospital for treatment to injuries described as serious but not life-threatening.
