A man who was caught on camera appearing to mock the Ibrox disaster has been fired from his job.

Footage from Sunday’s Old Firm clash at Ibrox appeared to show a man among Celtic supporters holding a mobile phone with the number 66 visible on the screen, chanting with his hands in the air.

He then puts the phone away and raises six fingers repeatedly.

The 1971 Ibrox disaster was a crush among the crowd on an exit stairway at an Old Firm football game that led to the deaths of 66 people.

Building contractor Advance Construction Scotland confirmed a man had had his employment terminated in connection with the incident, in line with disciplinary procedures.

A spokesperson for the company said: “We can confirm that an individual has been dismissed from our employment, following an incident involving completely unacceptable behaviour at the recent Rangers v Celtic football match.

“As a company, we hold all employees to the highest standards of conduct, both inside and outside the workplace.

“In line with our disciplinary procedures, we will not tolerate or condone this behaviour. We believe that Police Scotland is also investigating this incident, and therefore, we are unable to make any further comment on the matter.”

A Rangers spokesperson said mocking of the Ibrox disaster has “no place in any football stadium”.

“The Ibrox disaster remains the darkest day in our club’s history and continues to affect a number of families to this day,” they said.

“The mocking and celebration of any tragedy is abhorrent, and has no place in any football stadium or society as a whole.”

A spokesperson for Celtic confirmed they were investigating the matter and would take any “appropriate” action.

Responding to a request for comment regarding the video from Sunday’s match, a Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We are aware of the incident and enquiries are ongoing.”
