The family of Jagtar Singh Johal say it’s a “moment of joy” seeing him released from prison in India after nine years.
The Dumbarton-born activist was arrested by Indian authorities in 2017, in connection with alleged terror offences.
The 39-year-old was acquitted last year in a case in which he was accused of financially supporting a terror group.
Mr Johal has been released on bail nearly a decade on from his imprisonment – a moment his brother, Gurpreet Singh Johal, has long awaited.
“It’s taken nine years to get to this stage. So it was a victorious moment for the campaign,” he told STV News, “It’s a moment to cherish, but the battle continues because we still need to bring him home.”
Mr Johal still faces federal charges lodged by the Indian authorities and could face the death penalty.

Gurpreet Singh Johal said he was “very emotional” upon seeing his brother again via video, having not seen him since his wedding day.
He was able to speak to his brother following his release.
He said: “He’s relieved, because he didn’t think he was coming out today. Various court actions have been taken in order for him to be released today.
“He was illegally detained for the last four days and is taking a habeas corpus petition in order to have him released. The UK government could have done more to get him out on Monday night.”
Mr Johal said the last two weeks waiting for his brother’s release have been “worse than the last nine years”.
During his bail release, Mr Johal will stay with family over in India according to his brother.
He added: “Today’s about him being at liberty, and it’s about him having that little bit of freedom whilst restricted.
“At least he’ll be able to phone his wife when he feels like it. And he’ll be able to speak to the family when he wants to.”
According to Gurpreet Singh Johal, a witness is due to give evidence in the coming weeks, after which they will decide his brother’s next steps.
