The family of a Scottish sailor who was sentenced to three months in a Bahrain prison are “overjoyed” after he returned home on Friday.

Owen Haggerty, from Renfrewshire, was sentenced after being convicted of assault. His family say he was attempting to break up a fight.

The sailor was initially held in a detention centre following the incident on February 14, and was due to spend the next three months in the Gulf state’s Hidd Prison.

However, mum Kirsty Reynolds received a phone call from the British Embassy to confirm that a pardon was granted and the sailor would be able to return home.

The family met the sailor at the airport after he returned to Scottish soil. The relieved mum said the ordeal had been a “horrible nightmare”.

She wrote on social media: “I am overjoyed to let you all know Owen is finally home after this horrible nightmare.

“Words can’t express our relief and gratitude as we welcome him back into our arms. Thank you all for your support, love, and prayers during this challenging time.

“We are looking forward to healing and moving forward.”
