The family of a pensioner who died following a car crash in Rutherglen have said they are “heartbroken” by the loss.

John Laird, 80, died in Queen Elizabeth University Hospital following the collision on Mill Street on Friday.

Mr Laird, from Glasgow, was the driver of a Mercedes C220 when he collided with a Ford Mondeo at the junction with King’s Park Avenue at around 11.50pm.

The passenger of the car, 73-year-old Michael McManamon, died at the scene of the collision.

Police are appealing for witnesses and have arrested a 34-year-old man, who was uninjured in the crash, in connection with the incident.

Mr Laird’s family said: “We are heartbroken and shocked at the loss of our much-loved John, a husband, father and grandad.

“He will be sorely missed.

“We are comforted by the kind messages from friends and family who knew him well and appreciated all he did for them.”

Sergeant Gemma Blackadder, Lanarkshire Road Policing Unit said: “Our thoughts remain with both deceased’s family and friends.

“Our enquiries are continuing to establish the full circumstances and I would urge anyone who may be able to help and who hasn’t yet spoken to police to get in touch.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting incident number 4274 of November 18, 2022.”
