Parents and carers of children eligible for free school meals in Glasgow are to receive an additional one-off winter holiday payment of £177.50 per child.

The announcement was made by Glasgow City Council on Monday in a letter signed by the executive director of education Maureen McKenna.

It is part of the financial support being provided by the Scottish Government in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The council has indicated that those eligible will not need to contact them or make a new application if their family is in receipt of free school meals or if they have previous additional holiday payments over the last 20 months.

The money will automatically be paid into bank accounts from December 3, the council said.

New applicants who apply before December 3 will be paid and receive the payment from December 17.

In Glasgow, all P1 to P4 pupils receive the universal school meal, but only families eligible on financial grounds will receive the additional payment.

New applications received between December 3 and December 22 which meet the eligibility criteria will be paid within two weeks of the council receiving the application.

However, they added that this may run into January 2022 due to the council holidays from December 25 until January 5.

Applications received after December 22 which meet the criteria will only receive free school meals and not the additional winter holiday payment.
