A man who attacked a woman on a bus after she criticised him for holding it up has been jailed for 20 months.

Jamie Michie, 40, attacked the woman on Glasgow’s Eglington Street on November 26 last year.

Glasgow Sheriff Court heard that a bleeding Michie boarded the bus while intoxicated and staggering.

Prosecutor Victoria Keel stated that Michie’s behaviour resulted in a delay in the bus moving.

The passenger said to Michie: “Hurry up, we are leaving.”

Michie went on to repeatedly punch the woman in the head, causing her nose to bleed and a lump to her head.

Michie, formerly of Paisley, staggered off the bus and approached another bus stop.

A bus driver was waiting to start his shift when Michie went up to him.

The court heard he grabbed the driver’s backpack and attempted to pull it over his head.

He attempted to take the bag, but the driver was able to hold on and pulled Michie to stop him from taking it.

Michie then claimed that he had been hit by a member of the public, who replied to him: “You just attacked him.”

The bus driver continued to hold on to Michie until police officers arrived.

Michie was put in a cell van where he spat at a police officer, which had blood in it from his wound.

He was then taken to hospital where three stitches were given to him to repair his injury.

Michie pleaded guilty on Friday to an assault to injury, an assault to injury and attempted robbery, as well as an assault on the officer.

His lawyer told the court that Michie apologises to his victims for his actions.

Sheriff Andrew McIntyre when jailing Mitchie stated that his behaviour was “shocking.”

The sheriff added: “It is quite awful that people going about their business in Glasgow have been subjected to this behaviour, as well as a man going to his work.

“This type of behaviour makes people think they cannot go about the city freely. This has to be marked by the court.”
