A drunk driver who left his friends with life-changing injuries after a high-speed car crash has been jailed.
Callum Quayle crashed into three cars and overturned one of them in Glasgow’s Springboig on November 12, 2022.
The 23-year-old had driven at high speed on a bend, losing control of his Ford Fiesta and mounting a kerb.
One of Quayle’s passengers, 21, suffered a fracture to his spinal column and is now paraplegic.
He also sustained a life-threatening injury to his lung and requires living support from his mother.
Quayle’s other passenger, also 21, received bruised lungs and a blood clot in his left lung, among other injuries.
Quayle pled guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
He also admitted driving while under the influence of alcohol.
Sheriff Andrew McIntyre disqualified Quayle from driving for 63 months at sentencing as well as imposing the prison term.
Quayle will also need to sit the extended test before he will be able to regain his licence.
The court heard that Quayle, of Tollcross, and his two friends had been at a charity function at a bar around 8.30pm.
The trio, who had been drinking, left the pub at 1am and entered Quayle’s vehicle with the intention of going to a friend’s house together.
Quayle accelerated heavily during the journey which made one passenger “very concerned” for his safety.
He stated that Quayle “must have had his foot to the floor” and believed he was going at 90mph.
Prosecutor Jenny Reid said: “He approached a left-hand bend on Hallhill Road and attempted to negotiate it.
“Due to the high speed of the vehicle and the forces involved, the tyre became insufficient to maintain traction on the tarmac.
“The vehicle veered to the offside, and Quayle lost control.”
The car mounted a kerb and initially struck a metal road sign pole.
The momentum propelled the vehicle forward and it hit a Ford Ranger parked outside a house.
Ms Reid add: “The impact caused the Ford vehicle to be overturned on its length and into the front garden of the property, causing damage to the wall.”
Quayle’s car then hit two more vehicles that were unattended before it stopped.
All three occupants were removed from the vehicle by passers-by who believed that the car was on fire due to smoke being present.
Quayle was given a blood test and found to have 61 milligrams of blood in 100 millilitres when the legal limit is 50 milligrams.
Quayle’s passengers were taken to hospital.
