A car crashed on the M8 after a shopping trolley was thrown from a bridge onto the motorway during rush hour.

The 22-year-old male driver has been left “shaken” by the incident, which happened at J10 near to Glasgow Fort on Tuesday night.

The man was on his way home from work when he spotted three youths running across the bridge above.

He told STV News: “I was half expecting something to happen.

“I was expecting a brick, certainly not a shopping trolley.

“It was bouncing right in front of the car. I had no time to react.”

The driver slammed on his brakes, hit his hazard lights and moved from the middle to the outside lane as the trolley smashed against the front of his car.

He said: “It hit the bumper and the bonnet. The windscreen was okay, but it went right across the car. It’s destroyed the front of the vehicle.”

The driver said it was lucky the incident didn’t cause a pile-up.

A fire officer pulled over and was a witness for the police report.

The driver added: “Thankfully no one was hurt, but it’s left me a bit shaken.

“I’m gutted with what’s happened to my car, and it’s always going to be at the back of my mind when I’m driving on a motorway now.”

Police are investigating the incident.

A force spokesperson said: “Around 5.10pm on Tuesday, January 5, police received a report of a car having collided with a shopping trolley while travelling on the M8 southbound at J10.

“Enquiries are continuing.”
