Firefighters tackle blaze at battery recycling plant

Firefighters remain at the scene of a blaze at a recycling centre which they have been tackling since Monday evening.

Emergency services were called to Fenix Battery Recycling on Byrehill Place in Kilwinning just after 10pm.

Videos show large plumes of smoke billowing out of the factory, with witnesses reporting hearing blasts.

Shelly Smith said: “We were woken up by loud bangs which we thought were fireworks and then family calling asking if we were ok as they could see the flames and smoke and were worried it was our house.

“We could then see the smoke from our daughter’s room and the sky lighting up along with the bangs, it looked like fireworks flying out of it.

“The smoke was so thick and filling the sky, it was a really worrying time for everyone.”

Ms Smith told STV news that she and her neighbours were concerned by how loud the blaze was and how close it was to their homes.

“The loudness of it was another level, I’ve never seen a fire like it,” she said.

Six fire engines and a height appliance went to the scene in Byrehill Place, Kilwinning, when the alarm was raised at 10.05pm on Monday.

Police advised residents in the North Ayrshire town to stay indoors and keep their windows and doors closed as a precaution while emergency services dealt with the incident.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said there were still four fire appliances at the scene at 2pm on Tuesday.

There were no reports of any casualties.
