Police dispersal zone powers used 438 times in first month as dozens arrested

A dispersal zone was introduced in March to crack down on anti-social behaviour and crime in Glasgow city centre

Dispersal zone powers introduced in Glasgow city centre have been used by police nearly 450 times in the first month, with dozens of arrests made.

The powers allow officers to direct groups of at least two people to leave the area if their behaviour is impacting the safety and well-being of others.

They are banned from returning to the zone for 24 hours.

Glasgow Central Station, St Enoch Square and Union Street were identified as areas of particular concern for anti-social behaviour, and an area covering St Vincent Place, Glassford Street/Stockwell Street, to York Street/West Campbell Street, was brought into force.

Since the measures came into force in March, police have exercised dispersal powers on 438 occasions.

Officers say 43 people have been arrested for breaching dispersal orders by returning to the area within the restricted period.

Out of those, 14 were also arrested for additional offences, including breach of the peace, drug possession, assaulting police, possession of an offensive weapon, and two cases linked to sexual assault.

Authorities have confirmed the dispersal zone will remain in place, with its impact under ongoing review.

Superintendent Jackie Dunbar said the powers are being used “carefully and only when necessary”.

“These powers provide officers with an additional tool to address antisocial behaviour and help keep people safe in the city centre, and are used proportionately and only when necessary”, she added.

“The majority of those who have been issued with warnings have been adults, with very few instances involving those under the age of 16.

“We are continuing to engage with local residents, businesses, and partners, and feedback so far has been mostly positive.

“Our focus remains on ensuring Glasgow city centre is a safe and welcoming place for everyone.”
