A dog has drowned after falling through ice at Strathclyde Country Park.

Emergency services were called to the scene near the River Calder in Motherwell shortly after 4pm on Thursday, February 11.

Specialist water rescue resources were dispatched by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and the dog was removed from the water but it did not survive.

Area commander Stephen Wright, local senior officer for North Lanarkshire, said: “We were alerted at 4.18pm on Thursday, February 11, to reports of a dog in the water near the River Calder, at Strathclyde Country Park, Motherwell.

“Operations Control mobilised specialist water rescue resources to the scene.

“One dog was removed from the water, who sadly passed away.

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected.”
