The death of a bus driver who died following a crash with a van in Ayrshire is being treated as murder, police have said.

Gordon Stirling passed away in hospital almost a week after the incident, which involved a single-decker Stagecoach bus and a Ford Transit on the A77 near Galston, on August 14.

The 23-year-old from Crosshouse was rushed to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital with life threatening injuries.

Police later confirmed he had died, and said on Wednesday that a murder investigation has been launched.

The 42-year-old van driver was taken to hospital for treatment to serious injuries.

Detective chief inspector Jennifer McCulloch said: “Our enquiries into this incident are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

“Our thoughts remain with the family of Gordon Stirling and we are providing them with support as investigation progresses.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident or who has dashcam footage which may assist is asked to call 101, quoting incident number 3147 of Monday, August 14.”
