David Gray says Hibernian need points ‘quickly’ after late loss at Dundee United

David Gray is under no illusions about the importance of next Sunday’s Edinburgh derby with Hearts at Easter Road following a 3-2 defeat at Dundee United.

The Hibs boss watched his struggling side throw away a 2-1 lead at Tannadice on Saturday after skipper Joe Newell was sent off in the 85th minute for two bookable offences.

Luca Stephenson equalised for the home side deep into stoppage time before substitute Meshack Ubochioma netted the winner in the ninth minute of added time.

It was another blow for the Hibees, with the result sending them to the bottom of the William Hill Premiership table on goal difference, just behind Hearts.

However, Gray knows his players cannot afford to feel sorry for themselves and have to pick themselves up for next week’s derby clash.

The manager said: “We had to make sure we got out of that game with at least a point once it goes to 2-2.

“But every time we are asked a question at the moment, we’re coming up short and also being punished for every individual error that we’re making.

“Joe’s is very disappointed in himself because I think if we keep 11 players on the pitch, we win the game.”

He added: “Derbies will take care of themselves. You talk about how big the game is – this game’s always a huge one to look forward to, for usually the right reasons.

“It doesn’t matter who we’re playing next, we’re in a situation where we need to get points and we need to get them quickly. I know that’s my responsibility to make sure we do that.”

United moved up to fourth place in the table after Saturday’s win but the dramatic result was overshadowed by news of a serious injury to midfield stalwart Craig Sibbald.

The 29-year-old missed the Hibs game as he was undergoing groin surgery and he is set to be sidelined for some time.

Terrors boss Jim Goodwin said: “Sibbald damaged his right groin in training during the international break. That’s looking like it’s going to be a lengthy one.

“The surgery is actually taking place today (Saturday). He’s done significant damage to the right groin.

“In the modern-day game, there’s nothing too much to worry about. We’re looking at a considerable period out of action, but once the surgery is done and he makes a full recovery, he’ll be back better than ever.”

United skipper Ross Docherty was also absent but Goodwin expects the midfielder to return for next week’s game against Aberdeen.
