'Dangerous' grandson on the run was in 'agitated state', say police

Police have said a “dangerous” man who remains on the run for a third day following the death of a woman in Glasgow was in an “agitated state”.

Elizabeth Colligan, known as Betty, was pronounced dead after being found injured on Cardowan Road on Saturday morning.

Police launched a murder investigation following the 82-year-old’s death. They are hunting for her grandson, STV News understands.

Grant McKinnon, who is being described as a “dangerous” person and is being hunted by police, was last seen in the area at the same time.

McKinnon is described as 6ft tall, with a shaved head and was last seen wearing a black jacket with a red hood and blue jeans.

‘Agitated state’

On Tuesday afternoon, officers issued an update on the search for McKinnon at a press conference in Glasgow.

Superintendent Craig Brady said: “We have a dedicated team of officers working to find Grant MacKinnon and our enquiries suggests he may have been in an agitated state when last seen.

“Officers remain in the area and searches are being carried out in a number of areas, which include specialist resources from our dog unit. The public can approach officers if they have any concerns or call 101.

“We understand this police presence may be unsettling for the local community, but please be assured we are doing everything we can to trace Grant.

“I am also appealing to the local community to assist us in asking anyone who knows where he might be, to get in touch.

“The public should not approach him, but should contact us immediately on 999, quoting incident number 0523 of Saturday, April 18, or call Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

‘Lovely wee soul’

Following the news of Ms Colligan’s death, loved ones and friends have paid tribute to the “lovely lady” on social media.

Her niece, Yvonne Campbell, wrote: “Rest in peace aunty Betty you will never be forgotten, only one left from my wee ma’s side.

“Hope you are up there at peace with your sister, my wee ma. Love you forever aunty Betty, my wee aunty”.

Charelle McCarvill added: “I still can’t believe this, she was such a lovely woman, I saw her almost every day when she was shopping at Pets at Home.

“RIP Betty thank you for putting a smile on my face when I was working.”

Floral tributes have been laid at the scene, with notes recalling Ms Colligan’s time as a lollipop lady.

Neighbours told STV News that Ms Colligan was a “nice lady” and would always see her walking her dog Brock.

The incident has been described as “scary” and locals aren’t “used to things like this happening”.

One resident said: “Betty had a lovely wee soul and was very well known.”
