Cyclist in hospital after being hit by HGV in crash as streets closed

The Broomielaw in Glasgow city centre has been closed for more than six hours following the incident.

A cyclist has been taken to hospital after being struck down in a crash with a lorry.

The collision took place at around 10am on Friday near the Grosvenor Riverboat Casino on the Broomielaw in Glasgow city centre.

The road, which runs along the River Clyde, was shut shortly after 10am with no traffic allowed westbound between Jamaica Street/Glasgow Bridge and Robertson Street, and eastbound between York Street and Oswald Street.

The city’s traffic management said the roads are likely to remain shut for some time with emergency services still on the scene.

“Road users should avoid the area if possible and expect delays in the city centre as traffic diverts,” Glasgow’s traffic management team said.

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We received a call at 10am to attend a road traffic collision on Broomielaw, Glasgow.

“We dispatched three resources and the trauma team, and one patient was transported to the Queen Elizabeth hospital.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers are currently in attendance following a serious crash on Broomielaw, near the casino, which police were called to at 10.10am on Friday, January 27, 2023.

“The crash involved a cyclist and a HGV. Emergency services remain at the scene and the road is currently closed.”
