North Lanarkshire Council is to demolish 48 lock up-garages in Motherwell in order to provide more parking spaces in the town.
Councillors have approved a project to remove the lock-ups in Watson Street due to low demand, exacerbated by problems with anti-social behaviour and vandalism.
A report presented to the housing committee stated that as the lock-ups are designed to face away from housing, providing shelter for those engaging in undesirable activity, while the site would be more useful if it were converted to parking spaces.
Of the 48 garages 36 of them are currently empty, with many of those which are being rented are used for storage rather than for a vehicle. The small size of the garages also means that they are unsuitable for many modern cars.
The committee unanimously agreed to the demolition project, which will cost around £40,000 to complete. A report on similar sites around North Lanarkshire is also to be tabled at a future meeting.
